Cultivation: Probably best in bulb frame or alpine house, in rich peaty soil

Botanical Description:

Bulb: 2cm diameter

Stem: 4 - 35cm

Leaves: 6 - 7 shiny green, ovate to lanceolate, alternate

Flowers: Solitary, very broadly bell-shaped, outside dark red-purple, tessellated, inside green-yellow with red-purple tessellation

Segments: 1.5 - 2cm long, outer 1 - 1.5cm wide, inner 1.5 - 2cm, with rounded, incurved apex

Nectaries: Conspicuous, narrowly ovate, 1cm above base of perianth

Style: 10 - 15mm, triffid, lobes 2 - 5mm

Capsule: Not winged

Flowering time: V - VII

Habitat: Alpine meadows, stony hillsides by late snow patches, 1800 - 3000m

Distribution: NE Turkey and Caucasus
