Bulb: Of 2 - 4 scales, producing many bulblets (rice grains)

Stem: 5 - 30cm

Leaves: 2 - 7, linear to lanceolate, grooved

Flowers: 1 to several conical bells, yellow to orange-yellow

Segments: 1 - 2.5cm long

Nectaries: Small, round, at the base of the bell

Style: 8mm, slender, entire

Capsule: Not winged

Flowering time: III - VI

Habitat: Subalpine slopes and screes, sandy, stony soil by late snow patches, 400 - 2000m

Distribution: Western North America, British Colombia to New Mexico, California, Wyoming

Cultivation: Not an easy plant. Bulb frame in gritty soil, kept dry in summer
